Mark Chinery used to be a Fighter Control officer in the Royal Air Force. He created and still runs (Zincweb Internet), a Web Design, Marketing and E Commerce consultancy in 1998. A world apart? "Not really", he explains. "There are a number of similarities. The emphasis is still on expert communication and high quality client liaison with the ultimate goal of delivering a first class product. You must always strive for excellence."

Whether controlling jet fighters or a business, Mark knew that in order to get off the ground, you needed a flying start. He was well versed in the art of presentation for 16 years and spent a great deal of time preparing and delivering written and oral presentations whilst adhering to strict schedules. As a trainer, PowerPoint was used widely, and similarities between that and the Web became apparent. "...it was even possible to make titles fly in from the bottom of the screen but the novelty wore off after the second time and it became distracting. The technology was great but unnecessary.

"You don't need fancy effects if you can convey the message in a presentable, clear and concise manner. There is now too much emphasis on technology. You must not forget that a Web site is a publication. Reliance on the power of language should therefore be paramount. Content must be readily accessible, easy to understand and, most important of all, easy to translate into sales or potential sales. Visibility on the Web is normally only useful if it can be converted into profitability in one way or another.
